Rep. Annette Glenn this week celebrated the 99th anniversary of women securing the right to vote with a town hall event and sponsorship of a resolution approved by the Michigan House of Representatives.

The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was certified on Aug. 26th, 1920, and on Nov. 2nd of that year, millions of American women voted in elections for the first time.

Glenn sponsored a resolution approved this week by the Michigan House to commemorate the event. The resolution notes there are now a record-high 53 women serving in the Michigan Legislature, which “would not have been possible without the decades of hard work and sacrifices made by those who contributed to making the Nineteenth Amendment a reality.”

“People across the United States — women and men – have better, more fulfilling lives because of the monumental cultural shift ushered in with the women’s right to vote,” Glenn said. “It changed history, opened doors and transformed lives in countless ways that never could have been imagined 99 years ago.”

Glenn celebrated by hosting an event with other women elected to office in Midland County. The event was held Monday, Aug. 26 at the Midland County Historical Society.

Among those participating in the event were county Commissioner Jeanette Snyder, county Treasurer Cathy Lunsford, Village of Sanford President Dolores Porte, Larkin Township Supervisor Maria Sandow and Midland Public Schools Board of Education President Pamela Singer. Emcees for the evening were Sharon Mortensen, president and CEO of the Midland Area Community Foundation, and Jenee Velasquez, executive director of The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation.

“I am grateful to Rep. Annette Glenn for creating an opportunity to celebrate the 99th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment — the most significant milestone toward women’s equality in American history,” Velasquez said. “This milestone was achieved over decades, beyond the lifetimes of some of its greatest champions. It was inspiring to hear from our elected officials about how they use the lessons of the past to inform their decisions about our future. Now is the best time to be alive.”
