Rep. Glenn: Michigan House approves plan helping protect patients from sexual predators
RELEASE|September 4, 2019

Rep. Annette Glenn’s plan to prevent medical professionals convicted of sexual misconduct from continuing to practice medicine was approved today by the Michigan House.

Glenn’s legislation is part of a package strengthening sanctions against those convicted of sexual misconduct under the guise of medical treatment. The plan would require the state to permanently revoke a health professional’s license if convicted of such an offense.

The legislation continues to address issues raised by the House’s inquiry into the handling of the Larry Nassar sexual assault investigation at Michigan State University. The reforms address college campuses but go far beyond that to fight against sexual misconduct in all Michigan communities.

“A medical professional who violates the trust of a patient through sexual misconduct should never have the chance to victimize anyone else,” said Glenn, of Midland. “They should never be allowed to practice again. This measure is a key step toward protecting patients from sexual predators.”

The legislation is part of a broad effort with measures in the both the House and Senate. The package would extend the definition of sexual misconduct under the guise of medical treatment to include non-penetrative assaults and to include all genders. Additionally, this legislation would ensure a similar conviction in another state would prohibit an individual from practicing in Michigan.

House Bills 4372 and 4373 advance to the Senate for further consideration.
