Rep. Glenn: Michigan House approves bill honoring Marine from Midland
RELEASE|September 10, 2019

A Midland man who made the ultimate sacrifice for his community and country will be honored through legislation sponsored by Rep. Annette Glenn.

The Michigan House today unanimously approved Glenn’s measure to rename a portion of U.S. 10 in Midland the Marine Lance Corporal Steven J. Szymanski Memorial Highway.

Lance Cpl. Szymanski died at age 24 in 2014 during a training exercise at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. The Midland High School graduate joined the Marines in 2013.

“The sacrifices made by Lance Cpl. Szymanski, and other men and women who died serving our country and keeping us safe, must be remembered and honored,” Glenn said. “He loved his community, his family and friends — it’s fitting we show our appreciation and gratitude by renaming a stretch of highway many of us regularly travel in his honor. It’s a permanent reminder of his life, his sacrifice, and what he meant to the Midland community and his family.”

The bill calls for renaming the portion of U.S. 10 from Jefferson Avenue to Bay City Road in Szymanski’s honor.

The Michigan Memorial Highway Act was enacted in 2001 and allows for the naming of bridges and highways within the state. House Bill 4485 advances to the Senate for further consideration.
