Rep. Glenn: Gov. Whitmer loosens restrictions in new ‘stay home’ order, accepts Republican ideas
RELEASE|April 24, 2020

State Rep. Annette Glenn, R-Midland, today said the governor moved in the right direction by listening to key Republican proposals to allow the sale of more goods and services, increase outdoor activities, and give people the freedom to travel between residences.

The move extends the current “Stay Home” order through May 15 while allowing some important economic and recreational activities to resume. These include sectors previously recommended for re-opening by House Republicans – such as landscapers, lawn-service companies and nurseries, as well as retailers selling “non-essential” items through curbside pick-up or delivery. Large stores also can reopen areas that had been cordoned off, and bike repair and maintenance shops can also come back online as long as strict social distancing measures are kept in place.

“Many of the governor’s previous orders were unnecessary to protect the safety and health of families in Midland and Bay counties,” Glenn said. “I’m glad to see legislators’ recommendations taken into account to lift these unnecessary restrictions. It was clearly unfair to force Michiganders to suffer some of the strictest regulations in the entire country.”

Rep. Glenn said the House urged the governor to allow more employers to sell their product so long as they abide by best safety and health standards. The curbside sale and delivery for all businesses also is included in the House Republican “Roadmap to Recovery” proposal announced earlier this week.

“It made no sense to allow Meijer and Walmart to remain open while hurting our small businesses, telling them they can’t operate,” Glenn said. “Large and small businesses offering the same products, so long as they follow proper guideline to slow the spread of the virus and protect public safety, should be both allowed.”
