House approves long-overdue bipartisan no-fault solution

The Michigan House today approved a bipartisan plan to fix our state’s much-maligned car insurance system and reduce rates for all Michigan drivers, state Rep. Ben Frederick announced.

Frederick voted in favor of the plan which maintains the best life-saving medical benefits in the nation, provides seniors and those with other health insurance coverage the ability to opt out of personal injury coverage, reins in medical costs, and fights fraud – features designed to end Michigan’s long-standing tenure as the state with the most expensive car insurance rates in the nation.

Frederick has played a key role in leading reform efforts as a member of the House Select Committee on Reducing Car Insurance Rates, the special panel solely dedicated to crafting a long-lasting solution to lower drivers’ costs.

“After productive negotiations with the governor, this bipartisan solution makes common-sense compromises that will undoubtedly reduce the burdensome costs crushing families in mid-Michigan and across the state,” Frederick, of Owosso, said after the vote. “I’m pleased there was willingness on both sides of the aisle to work together to construct a plan guaranteeing Michigan families save a significant amount of money while protecting drivers and their loved ones injured in auto accidents. As a member of the special committee, it was a pleasure being part of the process that led to long-overdue reforms for the people of Michigan. After three months of examining this issue very carefully, I’m confident we have secured the right reform path.”

Senate Bill 1 now advances to the Senate for final legislative approval.
