Rep. Filler statement on coronavirus case in Clinton County
RELEASE|March 19, 2020
Contact: Graham Filler

State Rep. Graham Filler, of DeWitt, today issued the following statement after the first coronavirus case identified in Clinton County:

“We are experiencing unprecedented times in Michigan, and Clinton County is not immune. This situation is unsettling, but the people of our community are strong. I am confident we will get through this if we continue to work together.”

“Our state and local health care officials are prepared and trained to treat this patient and contain the virus. Being married to a physician, I have seen firsthand the extensive training and preparedness measures being put into place. I have also asked the Mid-Michigan District Health Department for more information on the case and we will continue to update the public as more details become available.

“During this unprecedented health crisis, we must ensure Sparrow and McLaren Greater Lansing, as well as our community health clinics, have the resources they need to address it. I recently supported two emergency budget action plans to address evolving challenges with the coronavirus. The most-recent measure brings the total state funding approved to $150 million, including the $25 million previously approved by the Legislature. The plan will provide $50 million for immediate needs such as virus monitoring and testing, $50 million for critical health care providers to expand capacity, and $50 million to keep in reserve for when necessary. The financial support comes with important accountability measures to ensure money is spent in the best interests of taxpayers.

“I encourage people to seek accurate, reliable information about this public health situation and work to help curtail its further spread. That means using effective preventive measures like washing your hands often with soap, cleaning frequently touched surfaces and staying home as much as you can, especially if you are feeling ill.

“For questions about coronavirus, Michigan residents can call 1-888-535-6136, email [email protected] or visit www.michigan.gov/coronavirus. The hotline is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.”
