Legislator invites family of fallen USAF major to event
State Rep. Kathy Crawford of Novi on Thursday was joined at the Michigan House of Representatives’ annual Sept. 11 Memorial Service by the family of a U.S. Air Force pilot who died in the line of duty in March.
Crawford said Maj. Andrew Becker of Novi died during a training exercise in New Mexico. She was joined at today’s ceremony at the Capitol by Becker’s parents, Gary and Stacy Becker. Also joining the representative were Novi Patrol Officer Bob Manar, and Novi Fire Captain Mark Theisen, first responders from the communities she serves.
“It was a somber and sad moment to read his name out with the other 13 first responders or members of the military from Michigan who lost their lives in the line of duty,” Crawford said. “I hope this ceremony brings comfort to his family.”
Crawford said Becker’s father, Gary Becker, said his son was inspired to enlist in the Air Force because of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, which occurred soon after he graduated from Novi High School.
Crawford said it is important to recognize those serving in the military and local first responders for the work they do to protect our nation and our communities.
“The events of 2001 showed us the courage and tenacity of first responders who went into the World Trade Center and members of the military who rushed to the aid of their comrades in arms at the Pentagon,” Crawford said. “I don’t think we can recognized these heroes enough.”
