House members invited first responders and members of the military from their communities to be their guests for the service. The ceremony included the ringing of a fire bell for those who died in the line of duty since Sept. 11, 2015 throughout Michigan. “Captain Szelag was a true hero who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the community,” said Rep. Cox, R-Livonia. “I’m so thankful his family and Chief Whitehead could be here with me today to recognize his heroism and the heroism of all other fallen heroes throughout our state.”
