Rep. Cole: Line 5 construction is the best plan for protecting Great Lakes
RELEASE|March 9, 2020

State Rep. Triston Cole, of Mancelona, today announced his support of Enbridge hiring two companies to begin construction for the Line 5 tunnel, and said it’s ridiculous environmental extremists continue disrupting the critical process.

“There is no logical reason to stop this process, yet extremists like Attorney General Dana Nessel continue to spread misinformation and about Line 5 and demand that it be shut down,” Cole said. “Constructing a new tunnel is the most practical and best solution for protecting our natural resources and economy.

“This wasn’t a decision made overnight – it was a well thought-out agreement reached between state leaders and the company a couple years ago. The plan will not only protect our Great Lakes for generations to come, but will provide an abundance of jobs to Michiganders. One of the companies Enbridge selected is also Michigan based; the attorney general has now put good-paying union jobs on hold as she spouts ignorance about the tunnel.

“Enough is enough – we have the answer we are looking for, not only for our natural resources, but for our economy,” Cole continued.

Cole said shutting down Line 5 would particularly hurt rural families up North, who depend on propane to heat their homes and businesses.

“More than 65% of people in the Upper Peninsula have propane delivered through Line 5,” Cole said. “It blows my mind Nessel would prefer to leave the aging pipeline in the Straits during this legal battle rather than take action.”

Cole said despite the complications posed by Nessel and other environmental extremists, he is glad to see Enbridge staying focused on its goal and taking the next steps for Michiganders.

“It’s amazing to me the company is covering the costs of this project 100%, which will cost $500 million,” Cole said. “Sometimes when the far-left fights against ideas like this, I’m left to wonder: are they only satisfied if the hard-working taxpayer is left footing the bill?”
