State Rep. Lee Chatfield, of Levering, today made the following statement in response to a Feb. 8 memo from the Michigan Department of Education, which could have negative financial and educational effects on libraries serving northern Michigan school districts:
“The recent interpretation of a 1970s law seems like a ridiculous state overreach that will have negative implications on many of our local schools. Many students utilize the library resources and this requirement has forced at least one school to temporarily close its library. This is completely unacceptable and it is yet another reminder of the negative consequences imposed on our communities when government bureaucrats neglect common sense.
“I’ll continue to demand answers from the Department of Education to ensure school funding is protected and students have the necessary resources to achieve.”
