Tour included presentations from local groups
State Rep. Lee Chatfield led fellow legislators along northern Michigan snowmobile trails over the weekend, beginning and ending in Indian River, with stops in Mackinaw City and Cheboygan on the North Central Trail.
The legislators stopped in Cheboygan to hear from the Cheboygan Trailblazers Club and Cheboygan Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Scott Herceg.
The annual tour highlights the popularity of the sport and its important impact on the state economy.
“Snowmobiling is a huge asset to northern Michigan’s tourism industry and our state’s economy as a whole,” said Chatfield, of Levering. “Snow sports like this keep tourists coming to Michigan during the winter months when many of our surrounding states experience a significant drop in tourism.”
There are 6,500 miles of snowmobile trails in Michigan and 197,000 registered snowmobiles, according to the Michigan Snowmobile Association, who sponsored the tour to ensure the journey incurred no costs for taxpayers. The trails are maintained thanks to the hard work of 68 volunteer clubs statewide, meaning no state budget dollars are appropriated for the trails. The average trail rider travels 1,500 miles per year and spends an average of $150 per day when riding. According to a study conducted by Michigan State University, snowmobiling has an economic impact of approximately $600 million.
Legislators journeyed from Indian River through Emmet County on the North Central Trail with a stop in Mackinaw City on Friday. The group continued to Cheboygan on Saturday.
“It’s always a pleasure to showcase northern Michigan,” Chatfield said. “There’s truly no better place to live than here and I’m honored to represent my home.”
