State Rep. Edward J. Canfield, D.O., today voted for legislation to eliminate driver responsibility fees.
Canfield, of Sebewaing, voted on a legislative package that will bring an end to the senseless fees that were established by a previous administration 15 years ago and have caused hardships on Michigan families since then.
“I am very pleased that we will be able to lift this cloud of debt from families that have been forced to pay the fees since 2003,” Canfield said. “The fees, combined with the loss of driving privileges, have kept too many people from success, often forcing them to depend on public assistance for survival.”
The legislation also creates a grace period from enactment of the bill thorough Dec. 31 that enables them to get their driver’s licenses back without paying a $125 restoration fee. People on monthly payment plans will receive immediate forgiveness, and others may participate in workplace development training programs to regain their driver’s licenses prior to Oct. 1.
The bills now go to the governor for consideration.
