Rep. Albert: Michigan House approves car insurance reform; now it’s time to ‘finish the job’
RELEASE|May 24, 2019

Rep. Thomas Albert and the state House today approved a historic plan to reform Michigan’s car insurance system and lower rates for all drivers.

The plan – approved with bipartisan support after weeks of negotiation – guarantees lower rates by giving drivers more choice on personal injury protection coverage, stops price gouging on medical services for car accident victims, and combats fraudulent claims. All Michigan drivers will save money on the personal injury protection portion of their policies, and some could save hundreds of dollars a year, depending on which coverage options they choose.

The bipartisan solution is designed to end Michigan’s long tenure as the state with the most expensive car insurance rates in the nation. The plan should soon be headed to the governor for her expected signature.

“The high cost of car insurance has been a huge issue – one I heard about constantly even before becoming our communities’ representative in the state House,” said Albert, of Lowell. “We’re as close to reform as we’ve ever been, and now it’s time to finish the job. I’m optimistic the plan will be signed into law by the governor, giving families much deserved and long overdue financial relief.”

Michigan’s costs are high largely because it’s the only state mandating unlimited lifetime health care coverage through car insurance. The reform plan allows those currently using the coverage to keep it, and those who want it in the future to continue buying it – while providing more affordable options.

The legislation is Senate Bill 1.
