Lawmaker: Funds will help create jobs, boost economy

State Rep. Matt Lori today announced the Michigan Strategic Fund has approved a grant to help a Cassopolis manufacturer expand its operations, which will create jobs and boost the local economy.

Lori, R-Constantine, said the village of Cassopolis was awarded a $127,800 Community Development Block Grant to be used toward infrastructure improvements for the Schwintek Inc. expansion project. Schwintek, a manufacturer of automatic Bimini tops for the boating industry, is expanding its facility because of increased demand. The expansion will generate a total capital investment of $750,000 and create 10 jobs, Lori said, noting that the company has agreed that at least six of the jobs will be offered to workers in low- to moderate-income families.

“We again see signs of Michigan’s economic recovery, which can be directly linked to the tough choices we have made in the Legislature in the past four years that have created a positive business environment,” Lori said. “Grants such as this significantly improve the quality of life for families in Southwest Michigan and provide a brighter future for the citizens of the Cassopolis area.”

The grant is one of several others awarded in the 59th House District in recent months that have created jobs in Sturgis and Cassopolis.
