Kahle joins in effort to provide greater resources for kinship caregivers
RELEASE|February 19, 2020

State Rep. Bronna Kahle has cosponsored bipartisan legislation to provide better access to support services for Michigan’s kinship caregivers.

Kinship caregivers are extended relatives, such as grandparents, or family friends, such as godparents, who have a kinship bond with a child who step up to become the primary caregiver for that child when his or her biological parents are unwilling or unable to raise and nurture them. This form of care allows children to grow up in a family environment without the transitional foster care setting.

Studies show children placed into kinship families have better, healthier behavioral and emotional outcomes than children in traditional foster care. Unfortunately, many kinship caregivers experience challenges as children often face mental health hurdles in the wake of the trauma that results from abandonment. Kahle said there is a need for a greater availability of resources for kinship caregivers who are feeling alone in their struggles.

“We should do all we can to make kinship care more possible,” said Kahle, of Adrian. “Providing resources for kinship caregivers is the key to ensuring Michigan children in need of warm, loving homes have the best possible outcomes and success in their futures.”

Kahle is familiar with the practice of kinship care. During her time as director of the Adrian Senior Center, the center hosted a weekly Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program and support group.

“Grandparents and all extended relatives who make the decision to raise a friend or family member’s child are truly selfless,” Kahle said. “I am thankful for their willingness to help keep children out of foster care, but I also understand the challenges they experience along the way. This plan will help with support and assistance for those individuals.”

House Bills 5443-4 were referred to the House Families, Children and Seniors Committee for consideration.
