House passes Welfare work requirements

Speaker of the House Tom Leonard, R-DeWitt, today issued the following statement upon House passage of Senate Bill 897:

“Welfare benefits should always be a hand up, not a handout.  But instead our current system takes millions of dollars from hard-working Michigan families and gives completely free benefits to people who are oftentimes perfectly able to work and earn their own health coverage.  Requiring part-time work to qualify for welfare benefits is a common-sense reform which puts able-bodied participants on the path to self-sufficiency and asks them to pitch in just half as much as the hard-working Michigan families who are paying for this program.”
