VetsPlate_Jnkns_0213_3The House Military and Veterans Affairs Committee today unanimously approved legislation sponsored by state Rep. Nancy Jenkins that will make the lives of Michigan veterans easier.

House Bill 4037 creates a veterans designation on Michigan’s driver’s licenses, eliminating hassles for veterans when showing proof of military service.

“Putting a veterans designation on a Michigan’s driver’s license eliminates the hurdles our veterans often go through to prove their military service for benefits, discounts and more,” said Jenkins, R-Clayton. “I’m committed to making the lives of our veterans easier and this legislation is a common-sense change that our veterans deserve.”

As an extra safeguard to ensure veterans are receiving their benefits, the Secretary of State’s office also will provide the application information to Michigan Department of Military and Veteran’s Affairs.

The committee also approved HB 4287, placing the designation on Michigan identification cards.

HB 4037 now heads to the full House for consideration.
