Houghton County to receive funds to improve infrastructure
RELEASE|April 2, 2019

State Rep. Greg Markkanen of Hancock, announced today that Portage Charter Township will receive a $960,000 loan and a $2,040,000 grant to construct a sewer collection system to repair vital infrastructure. The money is part of a $7.7 million investment by United States Department of Agriculture to rebuild and construct rural water infrastructure in Michigan.

“I have been working with our local officials and stakeholders at the state level to secure resources to bolster our infrastructure,” Markkanen said.  “I am happy to see our local officials taking advantage of grant programs such as these.”

Nearly 75 percent of homes in the Greens Acre Road/M-26 corridor have failing drain field systems. The project will replace collection pipe, repair manhole covers, and construct a collection system for 53 new residents and nine commercial businesses.
