Hoitenga plan restoring Second Amendment rights clears House committee
RELEASE|October 22, 2019

The House Military, Veterans and Homeland Security Committee today approved state Rep. Michele Hoitenga’s plan implementing Constitutional Carry in Michigan.

Hoitenga’s measure is part of a five-bill package that would eliminate current restrictions and penalties associated with carrying concealed weapons.

“This is about giving people back their fundamental right to bear arms and ensure law-abiding citizens are not prosecuted for carrying a firearm for their personal protection,” said Hoitenga, of Manton. “The current system makes too many criminals out of well-intended citizens simply exercising their rights under the state and federal constitutions.”

The bill package would allow gun owners to carry concealed firearms without a concealed pistol license (CPL). Furthermore, the legislation would repeal sections of law that outline requirements and penalties for the possession of, or the improper transportation of a concealed weapon without a CPL.

Hoitenga’s plan would amend the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to allow people to carry and transport firearms, concealed or not, without a hunting license in game areas. Hoitenga said her legislation does not authorize people to hunt game without hunting licenses.

House Bill 4772, along with the rest of the sweeping bill package, House Bills 4770-4774, now move to the House Judiciary Committee for consideration.
