Glenn supports new tax relief plan for flood, virus victims
RELEASE|July 23, 2020

Rep. Annette Glenn, R-Midland, Wednesday joined her colleagues in supporting a new plan to provide property tax relief to families in Bay and Midland counties who’ve been impacted by severe flooding and the coronavirus pandemic. Senate Bill 943 was passed 57 to 47 by the state House of Representatives Wednesday evening.

Glenn said the bill, similar to legislation unanimously approved by the state House and Senate last month but vetoed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, is much-needed tax relief for families across Michigan.

“I’ve heard from many concerned residents in our community who are out of work and have gone without income for weeks because of the virus,” Glenn said. “Add to that the thousands of property owners in Midland and Sanford devastated by flooding. I urge the governor to approve this new plan to provide much-needed tax relief.”

The new plan allows but does not require local governments, which are dependent on property tax revenue to provide essential services, to allow for property tax deferrals for those economically affected by coronavirus or flooding.

“I was very disappointed and frankly shocked when Gov. Whitmer vetoed the last plan to provide property tax relief to flood and virus victims in our communities, especially since it won unanimous bipartisan support,” Glenn said.

“Our families, friends, and neighbors are hurting, watching their jobs, businesses, and homes destroyed while already living through a public health crisis,” Glenn said. “If the governor doesn’t realize how badly this temporary relief is needed right now, I invite her to come to Midland and Sanford and join me in talking to taxpayers devastated by both the flooding and this virus.”
