Frederick: Senate Dems have a chance to make things right, consider what’s best for communities
RELEASE|May 1, 2019

Rep. Ben Frederick, of Owosso, released the following statement after the Michigan House passed an amended version of the snow day legislation, which will allow schools to not count school closures against their allowed number of snow days during a governor-declared state of emergency.

“This all started with the idea that schools and families shouldn’t be penalized for closures during a state of emergency following an extraordinary winter. It’s a commonsense solution that will allow schools other options than simply holding class deep into the summer – time which has diminished usefulness as families prepare for travel plans and as attention spans shorten in hot buildings.

“Sadly, this issue was derailed by partisan politics. But now Senate Democrats have a second chance to make this right and consider commonsense flexibility for schools and families when making their decision on this important legislation. I hope they make the right choice.”
