Local children have chance to join lawmaker in Lansing as part of summer reading program
State Rep. Jeff Farrington is offering students in first through sixth grade from Utica, Sterling Heights and Shelby Township the opportunity to be “Rep. for a Day” by participating in a summer reading program.
“This is a great program that encourages students to read and continue to learn even when school is out for the summer,” said Farrington, R-Utica. “By participating, kids will get the chance to have a truly unique experience by becoming ‘Rep. for a Day.'”
The program runs now through the end of August. Children wishing to participate will need to pick up a bookmark from the Utica, Sterling Heights or Shelby Township library. Once a child has read 10 books and filled out the bookmark, he or she can submit the bookmark to one of the libraries. Winners will then be picked to come to Lansing to be “Rep. for a Day” and will participate in session and mock committee hearings.
The Utica library is located at 7530 Auburn Road, the Sterling Heights library is located at 40255 Dodge Park Road, and the Shelby Township library is located at 51680 Van Dyke Ave.
