Calley spends March reading to local students
RELEASE|April 4, 2019

Lawmaker shared love for reading with children

State Rep. Julie Calley of Portland spent the month of March visiting several local elementary schools as students throughout Michigan observed March is Reading Month.

While visiting with the classrooms, Calley talked to the students about the importance of reading. She hopes visiting local classrooms and reading to the students will foster a love of books that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

“My goal was to emphasize how fundamental reading is, not only in the classroom, but throughout the balance of their lives,” Calley said. “I talked about state government, read books about Michigan, and typically closed with a humorous book about the consequences of too much screen time. I was absolutely delighted to be invited into so many classrooms and I am grateful for the opportunity to emphasize literacy.”

During the month of March, Calley had reading sessions at 13 schools and read to 1,721 students.
