Athletic press box debate heats up with proposal supported by Rep. Kahle

Advancing legislation addresses facility requirements

The Michigan House this week approved legislation championed by state Rep. Bronna Kahle to exempt outside viewing areas such as athletic field press boxes, from unnecessary heating requirements – saving school districts across the state from increased construction costs.

Kahle, of Adrian, cast her vote to remove the state construction code requirement that outdoor sporting event viewing areas include heating systems. She says the burdensome requirement to heat the structures when they are infrequently occupied creates cost-prohibitive problems for many schools across the state, including Madison School District in Adrian.

“This plan is a common-sense solution that helps our schools and local communities save money by eliminating needless government red tape,” Kahle said. “The requirement to put a heating system into a seasonal press box for schools is an overreach and adds unnecessary construction costs to these types of projects for hard-working taxpayers.”

Kahle has worked closely with state Sen. Dale Zorn on the plan since Madison School District Superintendent Ryan Rowe brought the issue to their attention. Madison School district is currently renovating their high school football stadium. Rowe says the district has run into hurdles regarding the installation of a heating system and the cost of the project has been estimated at $250,000.

Senate Bill 294 now returns to the Senate for further consideration.
