Project will provide safe passage for families, commerce

State Rep. Dan Lauwers today thanked residents in the China Township area for their patience as a dangerous bridge over the Belle River is being replaced.

Lauwers, of Brockway Township, who serves as House Majority Floor Leader, said the project was added to the current state budget because the bridge was no longer able to be used.

“We’ve been working hard in the Legislature to ensure more money is spent on our local infrastructure,” Lauwers said. “We listened to the people and are doing something about the problem, including a project in China Township. The St. Clair Highway bridge was considered structurally unsafe and was actually closed more than a year ago because it could not handle traffic.”

Rep. Lauwers said the $2.7 million project wouldn’t have been possible without local partners.

“I’m grateful that we can get this project scheduled so businesses that are affected know the road will be open soon and the future of their businesses are brighter,” Lauwers said. “I also commend township officials and the St. Clair Road Commission for working so hard to raise funds and partnering with the Legislature to make this improvement a priority.”
